Top Leaders' Single Nationality Ammendment Reaches Senate

PHNOM PENH: The Senate Expert Committee has begun reviewing and studying the draft amendments to the constitution regarding the determination of a single nationality for the heads of the four top institutions on Tuesday. The ammendment is intended for the positions of President of the Senate, President of the National Assembly, Prime Minister and the Constitutional Council.

A session was conducted to review and study the draft Constitution on the amendment of Article 19 (new), Article 42 (new), Article 106 (new), Article 119 (new) and Article 137 (new) of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Article 3 and Article 4 of the Constitution to the normal supplement functioning of the national institution. It was chaired the acting chairman of the Sixth Committee of the Senate, Ay Khon.

 Apart from the above mentioned articles, they have also reveiwed the draft law on the agreement between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the United Nations regarding the decision under Cambodian law, crimes committed during the period of Democratic Kampuchea on the arrangements during the transition and termination of the Extraordinary Chambers.

 The amendment on the constitution and the aditional constitution concerning the determination of aonly Khmer nationality for the leaders of the highest institutions was fully approved by the National assembly on Monday with votes 111/111.

 Prime Minister Hun Sen has initiated the drafting of the law, pointed out that there were two main reasons why he decided to propose a draft law and amend some articles of the constitution to determine the sole Khmer nationality to lead the top institutions of the nation. He stated that it will be a way to show national loyalty of the leaders. The Prime Minister has also said that it will provide a long-term benefit to the Cambodian nation by avoiding foreign interference.
